The Shavette is a disposable blade straight razor made in Solingen, Germany. The Shavette works like a straight razor, but the blade can be changed as it becomes dull. It has a plastic handle and aluminum shank. The removable plastic sleeve firmly holds the razor blade. Any Shavette can hold either a red sleeve or a black sleeve, but the red sleeve is specific to the short razor blade and the black sleeve is specific for the longer razor blade. Double-edged blades must be broken in half to fit in a Shavette. The Shavette uses one-half of a double-edge razor blade. On the back of the plastic Shavette packaging, there is a double-edge blade which can be split for use in your razor. To prepare more blades for use in your Shavette razor: hold a double-edge blade with a needle nose pliers near one edge of the blade with the other edge resting against a soft cushioned surface and bend the blade until it snaps in half. |

Solingen Shavette with Red Sleeve (the red sleeve holds shorter blade only) The Shavette works like a straight razor but with a disposable blade. It has a black plastic handle. The aluminum shank holds the removable red plastic sleeve, which securely holds the razor blade in place. The red sleeve holds a "Gillette" size blade which is approximately 1-1/2 inches long. Any Shavette sheath can hold either a red sleeve or a black sleeve. Razor Refill for the red sleeve: Take the red sleeve out of the aluminum shank of the handle by sliding it out the end. Open the red sleeve and notice that on one side there are two very small posts near the narrow side of the sleeve, and on the other half there are two holes that the posts go into. Place the sleeve in front of you with the narrow side of the sleeve toward you, and the posts pointing up. Take the blade (always handling it carefully… it is very sharp) and notice that there is an indention just past either end of the sharp edge. Lay the blade so the indentions rest in between the posts of the sleeve, and so the sharp edge protrudes slightly from the narrow side of the sleeve. Then follow the rest of the instructions for the black sleeve. The Solingen Shavette from Dovo with Black Sleeve is a disposable blade straight razor made in Solingen, Germany. This Dovo Shavette has a black sleeve, which only holds the German-style longer blade which is approximately 2-1/2" long. The Shavette works like a straight razor, but the blade can be changed as it becomes dull. It has a black plastic handle and aluminum shank. The removable black plastic sleeve firmly holds the razor blade. The black sleeve only holds the German-style longer blade. Any Shavette sheath can hold either a red sleeve or a black sleeve. Razor Refill for the black sleeve: Take the black sleeve out of the aluminum shank of the handle by sliding it out the end. Open the black sleeve and notice that on one side there are three round posts, and on the other half there are three holes that the posts go into. Place the sleeve in front of you with the posts pointing up. Take the blade (always handling it carefully… it is very sharp) and lay the blade so holes in the blade fit over the black posts, and so the sharp edge protrudes slightly from the narrow side of the sleeve...... Next, hold the blade near the open end of the sleeve, and carefully squeeze the sleeve closed with your thumb and finger at the 'hinged' end, gradually closing the sleeve completely, making sure the blade does not move out of position (always handling it carefully…it is very sharp). You may hear it click into place. Still holding the sleeve securely at the open end and making sure you are holding the sleeve by the top part away from the protruding blade edge, carefully slide the sleeve into the shank of the razor handle, making sure the blade does not slip out of place. Be sure to hold the sleeve securely until the sleeve is completely in the shank. ALWAYS exercise extreme care when removing the razor-filled sleeve from the shank. Merkur (Solingen) Safety Razors and Blades Merkur safety razors are high quality, precision made, classic double-edge safety razors made in Solingen, Germany. They are designed to shave with the use of lots of hot water, a shaving brush, and good shaving soaps. When you are ready to shave, soak your brush in hot water (ideally just the bristles). Allow the excess water to drain from the bristles, then gently work up some lather with your brush on your soap. Badger hair efficiently releases hot water and lather together as it is brushed up and down the face, making a thick, rich, opaque layer of lather (much better lather than a person can make with fingertips alone.) A shaving brush also gently cleans the skin before shaving. The hot water softens the whiskers. The up and down brushing makes the whiskers stand straight up in the thick lather, so the shaving blade cuts the whiskers off most effectively. Shaving with a safety razor should always be done in the direction the whiskers grow or lay on the face. This is usually done gently pulling the razor down the face and neck. Notice we said gently. Most of us have gotten used to the disposable blades, which are not nearly as sharp and thin, and require more pressure against the face. After shaving with your safety razor for a period of time, if you feel that you would like a slightly closer shave, one can gently shave in the opposite direction. However those just starting out, people with more sensitive skin, or those prone to ingrown hairs should perhaps not avail themselves of this option as redness and razor burn are likely to happen. Just remember, the experience of fine shaving requires slower, careful, gentle strokes. Don't press down!! It is possible that while re-learning(!) the art of shaving, a nick or two is likely to happen to all of us. It's just your face telling you to wake up and pay attention to the wonders of fine shaving! After finishing your shave, thoroughly rinse the brush and the safety razor. They should give many years of effective use
